Venezuelans using ropes to remove building debris to help in the search and rescue of victims of the earthquake, there is currently a significant shortage of heavy equipment to help with rescues.

Two powerful earthquakes (M7.2 and M7.5) struck northern Venezuela yesterday, causing widespread damage and triggering extensive rescue efforts. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.
Northern Venezuela lies within one of Earth's most tectonically complex regions, where the Caribbean and South American plates interact along a broad zone of active deformation. Rather than occurring along a single fault, tectonic stresses are distributed across a network of faults that accommodate ongoing plate motion, making the region susceptible to significant earthquakes.
Unfortunately, while geologists understand why earthquakes occur, we still cannot predict exactly when or where a fault will rupture. Instead, geologists study tectonic processes and earthquake histories to better understand where the greatest hazards exist.

Pretty rare earthquake activity tonight on Earth.
Both of these things happening within 2 hours of each other:
1 in 1,000 to 1,200 years
• A “doublet” earthquake in Venezuela (two quakes of similar magnitude in the exact same spot)
• A totally separate 6.9+ quake somewhere else (Japan)

"At the heart of the battle for democracy shines a simple truth: Democracy is more than a form of government. It is also the basis for lasting peace.
Millions of Venezuelans know this. Year after year, students, trade unions, journalists, business groups and ordinary citizens have mobilised in waves of resistance.
They have filled the streets in protest. When their votes were taken away, they banged pots and pans. When state surveillance is inescapable, they whisper.
People across the political spectrum – from communists to conservatives – have risen to challenge the regime. The opposition has tried one strategy after another.
Through it all, they have said: We strive not for revenge, but for justice. For the sanctity of the ballot box. For democracy. For peace."
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, spoke at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony today in Oslo, Norway.
Democracy – understood as the right to freely express one’s opinion, to cast one’s vote and to be represented in elective government – is the foundation of peace both within countries and between countries. Yet democracy is increasingly under threat around the world. Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado receives the Nobel Peace Prize today for her efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela.
