File over app
File over app is a philosophy: if you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Use tools that give you this freedom.
File over app is an appeal to tool makers: accept that all software is ephemeral, and give people ownership over their data.
In the fullness of time, the files you create are more important than the tools you use to create them. Apps are ephemeral, but your files have a chance to last.
The pyramids of Egypt contain hieroglyphs that were chiseled in stone thousands of years ago. The ideas hieroglyphs convey are more important than the type of chisel that was used to carve them.
The world is filled with ideas from generations past, transmitted through many mediums, from clay tablets to manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. These artifacts are objects that you can touch, hold, own, store, preserve, and look at. To read something written on paper all you need is eyeballs.
Today, we are creating innumerable digital artifacts, but most of these artifacts are out of our control. They are stored on servers, in databases, gated behind an internet connection, and login to a cloud service. Even the files on your hard drive use proprietary formats that make them incompatible with older systems.
Paraphrasing something I wrote recently:
> If you want your writing to still be readable on a computer from the 2060s or 2160s, it’s important that your notes can be read on a computer from the 1960s.
You should want the files you create to be durable, not only for posterity, but also for your future self. You never know when you might want to go back to something you created years or decades ago. Don’t lock your data into a format you can’t retrieve.
These days I write using an app I help make called Obsidian (@obsdmd), but it’s a delusion to think it will last forever. The app will eventually become obsolete. It’s the plain text files I create that are designed to last. Who knows if anyone will want to read them besides me, but future me is enough of an audience to make it worthwhile.
@JudiciaryDems You are not defending free speech or opposing Donald Trump. YOU ARE DEFENDING TERRORISTS. What needs to happen for you to open your eyes? They would kill all westerners if they could, and you want to protect them in the name of WHAT?
@FafaSchmitt@JudiciaryDems Nah. Advocating for a Terrorist group who wants to openly kill jews (and westerners like you), is against the law. Deal with it, not everything constitutes free speech.
@_akaCraigg@bbalsam@JudiciaryDems It's great to see people's true personalities here. This is hate speech 101. I'm not sure if you are even aware of it.
@oaklandDude@bbalsam@JudiciaryDems There is no hatred of the Palestinians. Hamas invaded a sovereign country, killed 1200+ people, and took 200+ hostages (they still hold many of them). They started a war. What do you expect? People DIE in a war.

10 Things you Weren't Taught about the Conflict in Israel
1. Arabs launched a massive world conquest 1400 years ago, taking most of the Middle East, and much of Africa, Europe, and Asia. They ethnically and culturally cleansed everywhere they went.
2. Rome and Mecca created state religions borrowing heavily from existing traditions. including Judaism, which they theologically sought to replace. Both empires sought to control minds, institutionalizing xenophobia and persecuting minorities.
3. State temples often replaced sacred sites in conquered areas. Zeus was placed in Jerusalem, and later mosques. Thousands of temples were destroyed or replaced across the Middle-East, India, and Europe. Ancient Judean kings previously destroyed Goddess temples.
4. The West has not exorcised it's hatred of Jews and pagans institutionalized by Rome. The global Muslim society is openly and brazenly antisemitic and xenophobic.
5. Judeans are indigenous to Judea. Arabs are from Arabia. The conflict isn't about land, it's about political control using religion and hate.
6. Arabs in Judea are part of general Arab culture, which controls 99%+ of the Middle-East. "Palestina" was the Roman name for Judea, which the British adopted, and Arabs only started using in the 1960s.
7. After WWI and the Ottomans' fall, the League of Nations and British re-dedicated the mandate as Jewish homeland. At the last minute, 77% was given to Arabs (now Jordan). The Arabs wanted 100% and have been fighting for it ever since.
8. The Arabs near Israel are used by the greater Arab world as disposable pawns to ethnically cleanse other faiths. They're indoctrinated with extremism from youth.
9. The Arab world sees this militancy as useful, but don't want it in their own societies, generally not accepting them as refugees.
10. The conflict is fueled by hate indoctrination and religious intolerance. Eliminating this is the only way to peace. The higher meaning of jihad is said to be self-perfection. May we aspire to evolve ourselves and our societies towards peace, tolerance, and mutual prosperity.
The Israel-Arab Conflict isn't Complex
1. 99.7% of MENA (Middle-East & N. Africa) is controlled by one religion, which has ethnically cleansed nearly all others.
2. The conflict is not about land, it's about jihad, which is ethnic cleansing + conquest.
3. Together jihadists + leftists have created a weaponized narrative framework of lies.
4. In reality, Arabs colonized Judea and ethnically cleansed nearly the entire MENA region, where they continue to persecute minorities. They often project their faults on their victims.
5. To be clear, the last thing jihadists want is a new state or new national identity -- they have over 50 already. By their own voices, they want the submission of all others.
6. The left's unholy alliance with jihadists is based on shared values of antisemitism and authoritarianism. Both groups wish to impose their values forcefully on others. Both create webs of rhetoric and grievances to excuse any actions, even the most despicable imaginable which go against any modern values.
7. The only solution is to unravel the threads of hate everywhere we can. We must exorcise antisemitism from our own society, which was deeply embedded in it by the Romans, who created a state religion institutionalizing it.
8. Hate must be completely disassembled from Israel's territories as well, for there to be peace in the region. Globally, we must support moderates and reject extremism.
9. The West must humbly open its mind and realize it hasn't lived up to its own values. It's been deeply programmed to demonize Jews for 1700 years. This hate indoctrination extremely clouds the West's judgements about Israel. Ideas have power.
10. The West is broken when it comes to Jews. Its ideas do not work at all, its obsession is highly neurotic and toxic. Extremism and hate need to be resolved everywhere.
11. The reason Western society is cherished is due to its hard fought for moral values. We must abide by these values if we want our civilization to continue and evolve. We must not fall into depravity. We must intensely guard our virtues!
