Americans work significantly more hours per year than Europeans.
But working longer hours ≠ economic success.

The key is productivity or GDP per hour worked. Switzerland has maintained high productivity, while countries like Germany and Italy have fallen behind the US.

To maintain prosperity, Europe needs to focus on increasing productivity through education, favorable investment conditions, and reforming tax systems that place a heavy burden on labor.

Shorter working hours are possible if coupled with being among the most productive.
