Everything David says here as an actor is completely valid. The speech was inherently something that required nuance. But James is also right in highlighting the problem of what Lex says. Clark is never 100% going to be sure about his humanity or humanness EVER - because people won’t let him. If not Lex then someone else.

So even if his Dad and his loved ones give him sermons about him belonging, and him *choosing* to be HUMAN, sometimes a knee-jerk reaction may get triggered in him when the Lex Luthors of the world call him an alien. And even that knee-jerk reaction is okay, it’s being human.
