However, that’s probably more a result of constraints imposed by our analytic techniques and data availability rather than a deliberate choice. We suggested single moments as an alternative. Moment-to-moment transitions (e.g., anxiety-> avoidance) are another promising one. (5/5)

These include time-varying models or within-person finite mixture models (shoutout to @aaronjfisher, my postdoc advisor for these ideas). The time seems ripe for modes to be (re-)introduced as an organizing construct for understanding psychopathology and personality.

I’m excited to share @EshkolR and my recently-accepted paper (https://t.co/k8bDRmsxfv), slated to be published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. In it, we propose a transdiagnostic approach centered on modes.

The main innovation of the paper is a research blueprint for studying modes empirically, an effort that has lagged behind their rich theoretical background and clinical use. We argue that recent innovations in the analysis of intensive longitudinal data can help close this gap.
