Quantities
Quantity words in English help us talk about amounts.
The key is whether the noun is countable (things you can count one by one, like books, apples, or people) or uncountable (things you measure as a mass or whole, like water, milk, or rice).
“How many…?” is used with countable nouns.
“How much…?” is used with uncountable nouns.
“A lot of / lots of,” “some,” “enough,” and “none” work with both.
🔷Basic amount words🔷
🔹Some (both countable and uncountable)
Means an unspecified amount that is more than zero but not a huge number. Neutral and common in positive sentences.
Examples: “I have some apples.” / “There is some water in the glass.”
🔹Many (countable only)
Means a large number. Often used in questions and negatives; in positive sentences we often prefer “a lot of.”
Example: “There are many books on the shelf.” / “How many people are coming?”
🔹Much (uncountable only)
Means a large amount. Common in questions and negatives; again, “a lot of” is more natural in everyday positive sentences.
Example: “There isn’t much milk left.” / “How much rice do we need?”
🔹A lot of / lots of (both)
Means a large quantity. Very common and natural in positive sentences for both countable and uncountable nouns.
Examples: “She has a lot of friends.” / “There is a lot of water in the bottle.”
🔷Small amounts – positive vs. negative feeling🔷
🔹A few (countable) – positive / “enough for the purpose”
Means a small number, but enough or satisfactory.
Example: “I have a few apples – we can make a small pie.”
🔹Few (countable) – negative / “not enough”
Means a small number and emphasizes that it is insufficient.
Example: “Few people came to the meeting” (so it was almost empty).
🔹A little (uncountable) – positive
Means a small amount, but enough.
Example: “There’s a little milk left – enough for coffee.”
🔹Little (uncountable) – negative
Means a small amount and emphasizes that it is not enough.
Example: “There is little water in the desert.”
🔷Enough, excess, and zero🔷
🔹Enough (both)
Means the right amount – not too little, not too much.
Examples: “We have enough chairs.” / “Is there enough sugar?”
🔹Too many (countable)
Means more than is wanted or needed (excess).
Example: “There are too many people in the room – it’s crowded.”
🔹Too much (uncountable)
Means more than is wanted or needed.
Example: “You put too much salt in the soup.”
🔹None (both)
Means zero / not any.
Examples: “None of the students failed.” / “There is none left.”
✍️Extra useful tips✍️
🔸In everyday spoken English, people often use “a lot of” instead of “much” or “many” in positive statements.
🔸“Any” is the usual partner of “some” in questions and negatives: “Do you have any apples?” / “I don’t have any water.”
🔸You can make the meaning stronger or weaker with words like “very few,” “quite a few,” “so much,” “far too many,” etc.
🔸Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable depending on meaning (e.g., “two coffees” = two cups vs. “coffee” as the drink in general).
Practice idea:
Look around you and make sentences.
🔹“There are a few pens on the table.”
🔹“I don’t have much free time today.”
🔹“We have enough food for dinner.”
These words become natural with practice.
Focus first on the countable/uncountable distinction and the positive/negative feeling of “a few / few” and “a little / little,” and the rest will fall into place easily.
