In July 2025, four sisters left their family behind and ventured off into the unknown. Just 2 weeks later, three of their brothers followed suit. Over the next 9 months, these intrepid siblings—all African wild dogs from Zambia’s Kafue National Park—traveled thousands of kilometers, braving untold hazards.

Some eventually settled into new territory, having completed the longest movement ever recorded for any African mammal. The others had their journey cut tragically short.

The saga highlights the vulnerability of this iconic canine, which remains one of the world’s most endangered mammals. But the findings also suggest wild dog populations are more connected than previously thought, with movements potentially linking ecosystems across eastern and southern Africa.
