NEW: UEFA has launched an investigation against Merih Demiral for flashing Turkish nationalist Grey Wolves sign last night during a game with Austria, Turkish media report

To learn more, I highly recommend reading this piece by @BBCNews & the wonderful #Turkey expert @WJ_Armstrong.
It delves into the Turkish state’s failures to enforce existing, post-1999 earthquake regulations on even the newest construction projects.

But Monday’s quake dashed those assumptions.
We saw newer buildings—inc some finished w/in the past year & some whose websites advertised them as earthquake-proof!—collapse like concrete card-houses.
Scores of millions live in Turkey’s fault zones. Many feel like sitting ducks.
Most of us didn’t move into those newer buildings—either bc they didn’t exist much in central Istanbul or bc we simply couldn’t afford it.
But we liked the psychological reassurance that assuming they’d be constructed to an earthquake-resistant regulatory standard provided.
My seismologist ex, & a great many of my friends in Istanbul, had hoped that choosing newer (post-1999 earthquake) buildings would constitute a strong form of protection against getting pancaked under collapsed buildings in “the big one” we all know will hit Istanbul eventually.
One of the most insidious, maddening realisations for anyone who lives in #Turkey (or, like me, spends tons of time there & dreams of returning permanently someday) is that no matter how selective we are in choosing our flat/accommodation, we are essentially powerless to fate.
These past two disastrous days in 🇹🇷 have delivered horrifying revelations.
Suspicions that experts like my seismologist ex shared (abt, for example, building regulations not being properly enforced) have been confirmed.
The psychological toll on ppl across Turkey is enormous.
