A study published in the science journal JAMA Psychiatry found a link between the climate crisis and domestic abuse: Every 1.8°F (1°C) increase in annual average temperature was linked to a more than 4.5% mean increase in cases of intimate partner violence in India, Pakistan, and Nepal.

The study looked at the experiences of 194,871 girls and women in India, Pakistan, and Nepal from 2010 to 2018, and compared that to temperature fluctuations. The violence increased across all socio-economic groups, but increased the most in low-income homes.

‘I’ve been seeing unusually high temperatures becoming more common,’ Suniti Gargi, an Indian activist, told the Guardian. ‘They cause tremendous economic stress in families. If a man can migrate to another state to get work, it can help keep the home fires burning but when he cannot for whatever reason, his wife is at the receiving end of his anger and feelings of uselessness.’

This study is one of many that find the climate crisis is linked to increases in violence around the world.
