When the Korean War ended in 1953, thousands of prisoners were sent home.

But 21 American POWs said no.

They refused to come back to the United States. Instead, in early 1954, they crossed into China with their former captors. One British soldier went with them.

America was stunned. Newspapers called them turncoats. Congress and the Army demanded to know how American soldiers could be brainwashed into choosing communism. The word "brainwashing" became part of everyday American language largely because of the Korean War.

The truth was messier. Some had collaborated in the camps and were afraid of being court-martialed if they came home. Some had fallen for the propaganda. At least one, a Black soldier named Clarence Adams, said he was leaving behind a segregated country that didn't treat him as equal.

Life in China didn't turn out like they were promised. Most worked in factories or on farms. Within a few years, nearly all of them came back to the US, one by one.

Clarence Adams returned in 1966 and was hauled in front of Congress.

But one, James Veneris, never came back. He stayed in China for the rest of his life and died there in 2004, half a century after he crossed the border.
