During this critical public health moment, we must acknowledge that police transparency is essential in order to truly ensure the health and safety of our communities. Priviledge to work alongside my @ColumbiaMSPH colleagues.
. @ColumbiaMSPH's Evan L. Eschliman + coauthors explain, "When facing #policebrutality, #publichealth does not have everything that it needs to analyze trends, design + promote interventions, + inform policy around this issue to improve #populationhealth." https://t.co/odXp1RAA88
The current NYPD budget minus $1 bil is still greater than the NYPD budget in 2014. Not sure when/why the demand became to return NYPD to the size it was when Eric Garner was murdered. $1 bil is nowhere near enough. #DefundNYPD
“The COVID pandemic has pulled back the curtain on our society’s inequity, but my hope is that the protests against systemic racism will tear DOWN the curtain”
— Dr. Janice Bowie (paraphrased!!)
"The citywide rent shortfall is a problem housing courts can’t solve. Instead, state and federal legislators must act quickly to keep as many cases as possible from reaching Housing Court in the first place."

The statute against loitering for the purposes of engaging in sex work is used to profile people who are presumed to be sex workers. 91% of those arrested in 2018 were Black + Latinx. More than 80% were trans and cis women. Often, these women were simply walking down the street.
NY! It’s about time we repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans ban! Text WALK to 50409 to send an email to @NYGovCuomo + your stare reps and keep the pressure up!
New York’s #WalkingWhileTrans ban is used to target, harass, and arrest Black + Latinx trans and cis women in public spaces. The bill to repeal this statute now has 32 co-sponsors in the Senate!
@AndreaSCousins @CarlHeastie @NYGovCuomo: Repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans ban!
It’s official: A majority of the @NYSenate has signed on to co-sponsor our legislation repealing the #WalkingWhileTrans ban.
The fight continues. Now, we need to get it to floor of the Senate and Assembly.
Join me for this important March & Rally to #Repeal50A on Sunday afternoon. 50-a is the statute shielding police from accountability for misconduct
We have to keep up the pressure.
If you live in Inwood or the Heights, join us as we march through to Riverbank!
Horrifying. You start with the tiny possibility that two officers may be walking over to deescalate the abusive one.
Instead, they join in beating a man trying to get out of traffic.
This isn’t a problem of bad apples or incidents. This is an institutional and systemic crisis.
Watching NYPD decked in full riot gear violently attack NYC residents standing up for Black lives just weeks after friends in NYC public hospitals re-used masks to treat patients with #COVID19 is infuriating to say the least. We need to #DefundThePolice@NYCMayor @NYCSpeakerCoJo
And let's remember that the police are increasing covid risk by:
* using tear gas
* herding demonstrators into tight spaces
* putting people in crowded jails
True peace is the presence of justice.
Justice means recognizing and dismantling the violence of racial injustices in policing, housing, healthcare, pollution, wages, etc.
We need legislatures to step up now with POLICY changes.
In NY, repealing 50-a is one place to start.
