For me, it’s this rock. Nestled at the end of Long Lake NY, I found it, or it found me, when I was 15. I dove off it. I swam off it. I don’t think anyone has ever been on it.
The rock is steep with deep water. It doesn’t want company.
But I kept coming back for 47 years and did so today. The rock seemed to know I was coming. It recognized me.
I checked for any signs of anyone else knowing of my “one thing”. Not a trace. It was exactly like my last visit.
It knows me because I take care of it. The rock, in kind, takes care of me.
I love to write here. The rock listens.
