Wow. The truth comes out. The US Secretary of Commerce just announced details of the last minute negotiations & how they came from Canada and not the US. He stated that they manufactured a lie to Canadians. And that the Liberals did it purely for political purposes due to the Alberta referendum coming up and the by-elections. He stated that the reasons the Liberals have put forward was a lie. 

Mark Carney and the Liberals need to go! Canadians deserve better than this shit.

JASON KENNEY HAS JOINED TEAM CARNEY ON THE TRADE WAR — AND ALBERTANS SHOULD PAY ATTENTION.

Let's start with something everyone should understand:

Trump's tariffs hurt Canada.

When the United States puts a tariff on Canadian products, those products become more expensive for American buyers. That can make Canadian exports less competitive, reduce demand and ultimately hurt Canadian businesses and workers.

Ouch.

But now Mark Carney wants Canada to respond dollar-for-dollar — and former Alberta premier Jason Kenney is cheering him on.

Kenney praised Carney with:

“Well done, Prime Minister.”

He then said:

“Responding to the new U.S. tariffs with counter tariffs is exactly the right thing to do at this time.”

Here's my problem with that.

A U.S. tariff hurts Canadians indirectly by making our exports more expensive in America.

A Canadian retaliatory tariff deliberately makes American products more expensive here in Canada.

Even Carney admits his retaliatory tariffs will “raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians.”

And this isn't an equal fight.

The United States has an economy roughly 10 times the size of Canada's.

So $1 of Canadian retaliation does not necessarily create the same economic pressure in America that $1 of American tariffs creates here.

Canada can hurt American exporters.

But we can also hurt ourselves badly in the process.

And Alberta has more reason than most provinces to be concerned.

Our economy depends heavily on exports to the United States, particularly energy. The longer this escalates, the greater the risk that investment is delayed, supply chains change, additional sectors are targeted and Alberta's most important export relationship becomes political leverage in an increasingly hostile trade war.

There's another lost opportunity here.

Trump has publicly raised the possibility of reviving Keystone XL, which could dramatically expand Alberta's access to U.S. refineries.

Interestingly, Carney himself had previously discussed reviving Keystone XL with Trump.

Now the broader trade negotiations have collapsed, and that potential opportunity for Alberta is once again surrounded by uncertainty.

That's why I find Jason Kenney's position so disappointing.

The former Alberta premier isn't merely saying Trump's tariffs are wrong.

I agree they're harmful.

Kenney is endorsing Carney's decision to impose another layer of tariffs that the Prime Minister himself admits will increase costs for Canadians.

On this issue, Jason Kenney has crossed over to Team Carney.

And Alberta should be asking why our answer to an American tax on Canadian trade should be an additional Canadian tax on ourselves.

The objective should be simple:

GET BACK TO TARIFF-FREE TRADE.

Negotiate.

De-escalate.

Protect Alberta's access to its largest customer.

And stop pretending that making Canadians pay more is somehow a victory over Donald Trump.

For me, this episode reinforces another point:

Alberta needs control over Alberta's economic future.

An independent Alberta could put tariff-free trade with the United States at the very top of its negotiating agenda instead of having our largest industry caught in a trade strategy designed in Ottawa.

Jason Kenney may think joining Carney's dollar-for-dollar trade war is the answer.

I don't.

Alberta is better positioned when Alberta speaks for Alberta.
