Batten Down the Hatches Cape Town
The big winter storm we have been watching for some days is now barreling for the west coast of South Africa where it should hit just before dawn on Sunday. (The satellite loop below is for 6 hours to 4pm Saturday afternoon)
The storm is still expected to bring widespread heavy rains and significant snowfalls across the Cape Provinces. It will also bring strong winds into western South Africa, while the eastern areas will experience moderate to fresh winds. Daytime temperatures in the western provinces will peak in the lower teens mostly.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has issued weather alerts for many places in western South Africa.
⚠️ Gale force to strong gale force winds (70-90km/h gusting to 90-120km/h) for the Cape Town Metropole, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Overstrand, and Theewaterskloof municipalities in the Western Cape.
⚠️ Heavy rains (50-70mm in 24 hours) resulting in flooding, and severe thunderstorms with large amounts of small hail in the western parts of the Western Cape.
⚠️Disruptive snowfalls in the Northern Cape (Hantam and Karoo Hoogland areas) and in the Western Cape (Cederberg and Cape Winelands).
⚠️ Storm surges, plus damaging coastal waves and winds along the Western Cape and Eastern Cape coastal areas.
⚠️Strong damaging winds (60-70km/h gusting to 80-95km/h) over the Northern Cape and the western parts of the Free State and North West provinces.
