If this self-revelation is indirect or deferred in some way*, then there is the possibility that some moment, some aspect of the process, the event itself, is unconscious.

I agree that the situation needed to be checked out; but not like that. As for his daughter, I don't think she learned that her dad will do anything to protect her, so much as she learned that her father is a scary guy who might charge into a place and start punching and kicking women until they're unconscious.
