Manipur must become its own brand ambassador
When people from outside Manipur, or even people from within the state, travel to visit its tourist sites, it should remind all of us of the immense potential of the tourism industry. Manipur possesses natural beauty, cultural richness and unique traditions that many places in the world would envy. Even a small hillock, if properly developed and maintained, can be transformed into an attractive tourist destination. Likewise, local festivals such as Yaoshang can be promoted and presented to the outside world as a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.
In this era of instant communication, social media and global influence, the way visitors experience a place can quickly shape its reputation. Therefore, the general population must make a conscious effort to welcome guests with the utmost hospitality and warmth. Tourism is not sustained only by those who are directly involved in the industry, such as taxi drivers, hotels, homestays, restaurants, souvenir shops, or managers of tourist sites. Every citizen, in one way or another, contributes to the overall impression that visitors carry back with them.
Even individuals who are not remotely connected with the tourism sector should cultivate the mindset of being informal ambassadors of the state. The courtesy shown to a visitor, the willingness to guide someone who is unfamiliar with the area and the pride taken in local culture and environment all contribute to shaping the image of Manipur in the minds of outsiders.
However, for tourism to truly flourish, one fundamental condition must be ensured - a stable and dependable law-and-order situation. No matter how beautiful a destination may be, visitors will hesitate to travel if they perceive insecurity or instability. For this reason, disagreements and tensions, however serious they may appear, should never be allowed to spiral into full-blown conflict. Such situations ultimately harm everyone, because instability discourages investment, deters visitors and damages the long-term prospects of the state.
In the end, conflict is always a lose-lose situation. Peace, stability and a collective commitment to hospitality are the foundations upon which a thriving tourism industry can be built. If these conditions are nurtured, Manipur has every opportunity to emerge as one of the most distinctive and welcoming destinations in the region.
