Solana’s biggest protocol shift is here: SIMD-0326 (Alpenglow). It replaces TowerBFT with a faster, cleaner consensus. As validators, here’s how we see it 🧵

1/ Voting cost:
🔹Today: ~2 SOL/epoch in vote txs.
🔹Alpenglow: vote txs gone, replaced by 1.6 SOL VAT/epoch (burned). Cheaper, simpler, but still a fixed cost.

2/ Finality:
🔹TowerBFT: ~12.8s
🔹Alpenglow: 100–150ms. That’s NASDAQ like speed which is 100-400ms.

3/ Resilience:
🔹TowerBFT: safe up to 33% adversarial stake.
🔹Alpenglow: live even with 20% adversarial + 20% offline (“20+20”).

4/ Certificates:
🔹Off-chain votes → leaders aggregate into notarization, skip, or finalization proofs. Less spam, lighter ledger.

5/ Economics caveat:
🔹The VAT is only part of the story. Leader rewards, relay/repair incentives, and VAT levels might depend on future SIMDs. Economics are not fully settled yet.

7/ Trade-offs:
🔹MEV profits shrink ~30–40% → good for users, but may push validators to centralize geographically, especially with upcoming JITO BAM changes.
🔹Stake-ordered propagation could disadvantage small validators. That might be mitigated with Double Zero.
