Our article in @JournPractice is now out, my first journal publication! In it, @MonikaWinarnita, Nasya Bahfen, @a_rahajeng, @Byrne_JC, and I explore how independent female journalists in Indonesia report on gender issues neglected by mainstream media. https://t.co/4RVhqbnsyH
Excited to see our research looking into how journalists approach gender and sexual violence in Indonesia being published in this important book on #metoo in the Global South
The line for the BBQ / cake stall is longer than the line to vote at my local primary school. Highlights the great job @AusElectoralCom staff do, and that the democracy sausage is an integral part of voting in Aus. It's the only reason I don't early vote tbh
One sign that the Putin regime is in trouble over the news from Ukraine and rising domestic discontent. It is starting to use the equipment installed under the 'sovereign internet law' to throttle traffic on social networks.
4/14 What drives Putin's anti-NATO propaganda, anti-Westernism, and aggression on the international stage is his domestic needs as a kleptocratic dictator who has abused his power for personal enrichment. Since 2005, he has exploited anti-Westernism in four self-serving ways.
The shark alarm going off while we were on the starting line for an ocean swim race - just Perth things. The race was merely delayed, not cancelled ofc 🦈
Last show for the year and last for me as Executive Producer of @TheInformerJOY. A massive thank you to the reporting team for putting in so much time and hard work. It's been really rewarding bringing important stories impacting queer people here and around the world on @JOY949
Bumper show for our last of the year: Calls for Aus Magnitsky laws to be used against Chechen leaders of LGBTIQ persecution; critics say 'cyber-bullying' bill is about silencing dissent; gay Christian man speaks out against Rel. Discr. Bill. @JOYPodcasts

On the radio twice today 🤗 Along w @TheInformerJOY, I get to share one of my other passions, club (and bedroom raving) music, with my boy @RealWoolley on Area 3000 Radio. Ofc we had to have an IR reference for our b2b DJ moniker! Paris Accord 6pm on https://t.co/F0BiDOnCzs
Previously I spoke with a HIV researcher working to stem the rising HIV infection rate in Indonesia, which has one of the highest rates in SE Asia. Political scapegoating of sexual & gender minorities is getting in the way of science based public health, with dire consequences
As yesterday was World AIDS Day, on tonight's show we look back on some of this year's stories by @RSambell & @gavinheight covering HIV/AIDS. Tonight 7pm on @JOY949
Just got off the phone with @ghassan_EA, Legal Director of @EqualityAu discussing the dumpster fire that is the Coalition's proposed Religious Freedom to Discriminate Bill. Tune in to @TheInformerJOY 7pm @JOY949 / pod apps and then write to your local MP #ReligiousBigotryBill
It comes as no surprise that some of my ~vaccine hesitant~ colleagues are now sinking thousands into a Ponzi scheme💸 I guess when you believe in injectable 5G nano antennas, 15% returns per month aren't too much of a stretch. (To be clear, these are not my Joy or LTU colleagues)
The gig economy can sometimes require a level of cognitive dissonance. Gig 1: copyediting a book that argues that the green economy discourse merely perpetuates destructive extractavism. Gig 2: Drilling offshore for gas to feed post-Fukushima Japan's insatiable appetite for LNG😅
Vic is a contradiction: it leads the nation on many LGBTQIA+ reforms yet has some of the lowest queer representation in parliament. I spoke with one of the only two out MPs @ShingvWorld about why she thought this was & how to increase numbers to better reflect society on @JOY949
Despite Vic leading the country on many LGBTQIA+ reforms, state parliament has some of the lowest representation of queer people. @VicPrideLobby has launched a campaign to change that. @gavinheight spoke w @ShingvWorld & @nevenaspirovska about what should be done. 7pm on @JOY949
Community sponsorship of refugees has many benefits, especially for queer refugees who find it harder to find community and navigate service delivery in both refugee and LGBQTI spaces. Community groups are eager to sponsor refugees in need, if only the Fed Gov would allow them.
Community sponsorship refugee programs allow refugees to be supported by community, leading to better outcomes, especially for queer refugees. @gavinheight spoke to @McNairDr of @pridefdnaus, Manu Kailom & Ian Seal of Three for All, & @Renee_Dixson of @FDPN_LGBTIQ. Podcast is up
On location at @TheInformerJOY studios today for @JOY949. With the power out at my place, my nephew's room offered the best acoustics of my back-up options. May have got distracted from editing by the Lego at some point
Some personal news. Delighted to announce that 10 years after receiving my PhD—after 3 countries, 4 universities, dozens of publications & 100s of citations of my work—I still don’t have a steady job.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid assured me in an itw yesterday that the mvmt is "very much" in favour of girls' #education. Today in #Kabul, attended this meeting between #Taliban leaders & university representatives: only men. Was told "Women are not allowed." #Afghanistan
'The extraordinary response of [the] government to the humanitarian catastrophe now unfolding is shameful and unforgivable.' I spoke with Dennis Altman about the Aus Gov's response to the situation in Afghanistan. Thurs 7pm on @TheInformerJOY@JOY949 https://t.co/3odACEkcw7
Denying protection visas to people who guarded our embassy because they were contractors not direct employees, while they are being hunted down by the Taliban must be casualised work in its final form. It can't get any more grotesque than this, surely. Shame, Australia, shame.
