Steel for factories & warehouses: fabricated in our own plant, shipped supply-only, erected by your local contractor. Founder · Senior Engineer, ZHF Group
Before you freeze a warehouse steel package: do clear height and racking intent get locked before bay spacing—or the other way around?
Curious how owners / EPC buyers sequence it. Soft discuss—no quotes, no EPC pitch.
Ladle crane runways need fatigue checks, steel by the furnace needs heat protection, and the plant keeps running.
Cranes, heat or process loads: which forced the most redesign?

SteelOrbis 26 Oct: 4,500 t structural steel order via SMS group for Saarstahl's new EAF at Völklingen. 185 t heats, 300 MVA, first heat Sep 2028. Europe's EAF switch is a building story too: a meltshop frame is not a warehouse frame.

@foragervoyager@tractor_owner Timber frame really is satisfying to watch go up. If the someday barn happens, plenty of people mix it: timber where you see it and live with it, steel for the wide clear span where the tractor and big doors go. What would the workshop mostly be for?
@NASLACS@BattleByrd 60x40 with 16 ft walls is a lot of air to heat. If in-floor heat is even a maybe, the tubing has to go in before the slab is poured, so that call comes first. Either way, get the roof insulation and vapor barrier right or the heat just goes out the top. Wood stove or gas?
@gajewskey Sleeping on site the night before is the right way to start it. One thing worth watching once it goes up: the gap where the wall sheeting meets the slab. Seal that well and wind, water and mice stay out through an Ohio winter. Is it going up as a steel frame?
@tripodsgarage Clay is brutal to clear, but shop-first is a smart way to learn the site before the house. Tip: if a living loft is in the plan, have it in the frame design from day one. Loft loads and stair openings change column and beam sizes, and it's far easier sized in than added later.
@CMamaAtchley Drainage before the build is the right order, and your 1971 house clearly taught you that. One thing we see on steel buildings: keep the slab and bottom of the wall panels a few inches above finished grade, sloped away. Water sitting at the base is what rusts them first.
@DavidBe13408737 Makes sense for that clear span. One thing worth raising with the builder early: barn air and wash-down are hard on steel near the floor, so ask how the column bases and the first few feet get protected. Is it going up this winter or in spring?
Spec boxes are cheap to build, costly to convert. Crane footings get decided before the tenant is known.
Does the frame limit the tenant first, or power?

ENR 20 Oct on JLL Q3: 33 spec U.S. industrial boxes of 1M+ sq ft underway, up from 18. Manufacturers moving in want power, then crane capability and wider docks. Older Class B boxes often lack clear height and column spacing for AS/RS.

@RedSquirrelFtw@lippyent Shop below, living above works really well up north. Going 3 or 4 storeys changes the frame a lot though: snow load on the roof, floors stiff enough that shop noise and vibration don't carry upstairs, and a proper fire break between the two. Would the shop be heated all winter?
@Chris_Koerners Barndo first, house later is a smart order on that much land. Worth settling one thing before the slab: where the house will sit someday, so the barndo's big doors, drive and power run aren't facing the wrong way in ten years. Living quarters on one end, or mostly shop?
@Zionzmanlutz Running out of room in a 3,500 sq ft open building within months is a good problem to have. If more offices are coming, framing them along one wall line keeps a clear lane to the big door, so the open floor still works for trucks and gear. Loft offices next?
@Drive_Protected Moving an install shop is a big week. If the new space has a bare steel roof, keep an eye on condensation once you run heat this winter. A drip landing on fresh film is the last thing you want. Hope the move goes smooth.
@MushLov@Evie_B2@wahinetoa7@sisalgirl Pole barn up and campers moving back in—that's real progress. Before winter really hits, check where roof runoff hits the ground around the posts; splash and freeze-thaw chew at post bases faster than people expect. How big a footprint did you end up with?
Policy money hits mills and auto lines. Building steel still waits on freeze and fab release. On upgrades you're seeing: does steel lock before or after process layout freezes?

Carney + Ford launch a C$8.7B steel/auto plan (21 Oct). Steel Action Fund: C$3.55B federal + C$1.67B Ontario over 5 yrs; auto gets C$2.5B more over 2 yrs. Aim: protect mills/lines from U.S. tariffs.

@cybrtrkguy@minusYCore While that trench is open, a spare empty conduit next to the power and cat6 is cheap insurance—future camera, gate, or antenna runs without digging again. Mark the trench route on a simple site sketch too; grass grows back fast and you'll thank yourself in two years.
