I've been seeing quotes and comments on this post, and it has been cracking me up 😂😂. The only restaurant you should be paying such ridiculous prices for food should be a 5 star ⭐ Michelin restaurant. But I doubt Nigeria even has such restaurants scattered about maybe two in Lagos and two in Abuja.
The problem is that Nigerians are consumerists and classists. They love to signal status and prove that they are high class or better than their neighbours. So even if it means paying exorbitant prices just to signal status, they will.
These restaurants have clocked this. A local restaurant or local bistro that would be ordinary in Europe becomes a "premium" establishment here. They overcharge Nigerians because they know our classist nature will make us pay just to belong.
It is not about the food. It is about the aesthetic. It is about the validation. It is about being seen in a place that signals "I have arrived." You are not paying for the meal. You are paying for the photo, the story, the fleeting feeling of superiority.
But here is the irony. You are being played. The restaurant knows you are not there for the food. You are there for the status. So they charge you double, triple whatever you will pay. And you pay it happily because it makes you feel like you belong to an exclusive social class.

Siendo electricista, chofer de camión, entrenador de volley de playa y seguramente un montón de otras cosas más porque eso es lo que tienen que hacer todos los atletas que no nacen en medio del privilegio ni tienen la suerte de que los encuentren “a tiempo”

My neighbor got a masters scholarship in Mathematics at the university of Calabria, Italy
The scholarship covers her tuition, accommodation, meal and stipends
But she needs money for flight tickets, visa application, initial settlement cost and miscellaneous which is a total of €3,122 (4.9 million naira)
I’ve seen her toil, sacrifice so much to get here and we can’t afford to lose this opportunity 🥺
