The handful of bad students/parents in each class do more to drag down public education than all the bad teachers combined.
If the other 95% of parents had any idea what the 5% are being allowed to get away with, they would riot.
Bring back expulsions. Other kids don’t deserve to be punished for the sake of a few derelict kids and their parents.
@DeAngelisCorey 1. After expenses, income is gonna be closer to $150k before tax.
2. I cannot even imagine how parents would behave if they were paying out of pocket for school. Would be like having the 14 worst bosses of your entire life, all at once.
@rpondiscio It’s the second one. But not necessarily from the three specific fields you listed. If the pay is competitive and the schedule fits personal needs better, capable people from every sector will consider it.
@MrDanielBuck If the other 95% of parents had any idea what 5% of kids (and their parents) are doing to education under the current RJ system
Public awareness is needed. Parents deserve to know.
This right here is the crux of the problem.
99% are meeting with friends, on their phones, goofing off—in other words, just being normal kids.
Stop treating every single misbehavior like a cry for help.
In my experience, the misbehaving kids don’t actually appreciate being treated that way. One of the most remarkable surprises over my years of teaching has been the number of “bad kids” who find me years later and thank me for being one of the very few teachers who wasn’t afraid to hold them accountable (while still treating them with respect).
We blame teachers because it’s easier than blaming a few really bad parents
Most people have ~zero clue what teaching is like
Ex. People on here saying the kids are in class all day so it’s the teachers fault. Yeah ok
Your kid is one of ~30+ kids in a class with one teacher who doesn’t even meet them until the school year starts. Factor out recess, lunch, PE, transitions to/from, etc, and a teacher gets ~5 hrs/day working on academics. Individually that’s about 10 minutes per student
Ever hang out with 30 same-aged kids? Pack behavior is insane. Next time you’re at Chuck E Cheese or a bday party, try giving a math lesson to the kids there - including the ones who aren’t yours
Among those 30 kids are 30 different ability levels ranging from sped to gifted, 30 different levels of intrinsic motivation, and 30 different sets of strongly held parent beliefs about how their kid should be taught. The teacher provides a foundation, but parents must supplement with individualized help if they want results for their child.
“Then discipline them!”
Parents have absolute authority to discipline as they see fit. Teachers have grades, feedback, and a prayer that the parent will gaf
“How dare you, I discipline my children!”
Yes, you do. But remember: there’s 30+ kids in that class. Approximately 3/30 students in a classroom will do more damage to your kids learning experience than you think. Most teachers spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with those 3 kids
“So send them to the principal!”
The sad reality is that those kids’ parents are the problem. They are usually drug addicts or just plain losers, and their kids will drag down an entire class with them. Try to kick them out and some slick lawyer will win them a lawsuit against the district (your taxpayer $)
Most good parents have no idea how bad this is or how their child’s education is being undermined by a few bad parents of classmates.
The nation's largest teachers union uses explicit racial quotas according to their official Bylaws and Constitution.
These quotas apply to their Board, all Committees, and their President.
I have the documents.
Buckle up 👇🧵
My 16yo is in the process of getting his drivers license.
CA requires someone under 18yo to get 50 hours of driving experience before they can take their drivers exam.
My rule is only that my son learn to drive with no aids so he has that skill BUT as soon as he gets his license he MUST drive our Model Y with FSD on.
Obviously safety isn’t guaranteed but it’s foolish to not at least look at this data and wonder why a parent would let their teenager drive something other than a Tesla.
@BoomerDivvies Wife and I talk about early retirement a lot. One question that keeps coming up:
When our kids are grown, will we have a ton of free time that we forgot even existed before we had kids? Will we even want to retire early still?
@NFL_DovKleiman Reggie Bush was dating Kim Kardashian, attending red carpet events in Hollywood, and hanging out with Snoop Dogg and Will Farrell while at USC
It is only a matter of time before:
- All bugs are worked out of FSD
- FSD is safer than human operators
- There is a large enough pool of data to make the above undeniable
- That data gets published
- A tidal wave of families move to cars with FSD bc their kids safety is priority #1
@chamath Maybe they should. But our country is divided pretty much down the middle on what constitutes domestic terrorism. BLM v Jan 6 for example. What you are suggesting would just become a new, more sinister form of lawfare
