@Arewa_Source Then those who are not in support should come out and condemn the statement or be invited by law enforcement agencies, or is he greater than Nigeria?
When Family Hurts
I never imagined that the biggest fight in my family would begin with a school admission.
My younger brother lost his wife when their daughter was only eight months old. Overnight, he became both father and mother, but it was obvious he was struggling. I had been married for ten years and already had three children, so when he asked if his daughter could stay with my family "for just a few months," I didn't hesitate.
Those few months became years.
She called me "Mummy." My children called her their sister. I attended every parent-teacher meeting, stayed up with her whenever she was sick, and celebrated every birthday. My brother visited often and paid for her expenses whenever he could, but because of his work, she spent almost all her time with us. Eventually, everyone around us forgot she wasn't my biological daughter.
When she turned sixteen, she gained admission into one of the best secondary schools in the state. The fees were far beyond what my brother could afford after losing his business. He came to my house one evening with tears in his eyes and said, "Please help me. I don't want her to lose this opportunity."
My husband and I discussed it all night. We eventually emptied our savings and paid the fees. We even postponed renovating our house because we believed her education was worth every sacrifice.
Two years later, my brother's fortunes changed. He started a thriving business, built a beautiful house, bought new cars, and finally asked his daughter to move in with him permanently. Although I missed her terribly, I encouraged her to go. She deserved to enjoy the time she had missed with her father.
At first, she called almost every day.
Then it became once a week.
Later, once a month.
Eventually, the calls stopped completely.
I convinced myself that she was simply adjusting to her new life.
Last month, she celebrated her twenty-first birthday with a lavish party. Almost the entire extended family attended. During the speeches, my brother thanked everyone who had supported him after his wife's death. He mentioned friends, neighbours, business partners, and even distant relatives.
Not once did he mention me or my husband.
I smiled through the event because I didn't want to embarrass anyone.
As we were leaving, one of my cousins walked up to me and whispered, "I thought they would at least acknowledge everything you did."
I smiled and replied, "Maybe they forgot."
Just then, my brother overheard us. He turned around and said calmly,
"Forget what? You only did what any sister should do. Why is everyone acting as if you raised her alone...
