My statement on Israel's decision to ban me and 10 other British MPs from entry.

"I have visited all parts of Palestine on several occasions, where I have witnessed the horrors of occupation, as well as the resilience and humanity of the Palestinian people.

They are the ones who suffer from Israel's apartheid. It is their freedom which is egregiously curtailed, alongside thousands of Palestinian refugees who are denied the right of return.

As the world wakes up to the genocide in Gaza, it is shocking that Israel continues to deny entry to UN investigators and international journalists. Israel doesn't want the world to see what it is doing - but we can never give up in our attempts to expose the truth.

That is the real scandal. Israel’s genocide cannot go unpunished - and I will keep speaking up for peace, freedom and justice for the Palestinian people."

La ultraderecha (neo)nazi ha vuelto a ganar elecciones en Alemania. Lo que no ocurría desde tiempos de Hitler. Propongo cinco claves para entenderlo:

1. El capitalismo, en su modalidad tecnofinanciera actual, es incapaz de producir bienestar para las mayorías en los países del Norte global. En ese contexto, resurge el fascismo como el mecanismo mediante el cual el ciudadano blanco precarizado de esas naciones canaliza su rabia y malestar. El fascismo de este siglo, al igual que el del siglo XX, es, ante todo, un recurso de última instancia al que recurren ciertas élites para que la crisis se procese sin que ellas pierdan privilegios ni márgenes de ganancia.

2. El marco democrático liberal, una vez más, se ve imposibilitado de impedir que lleguen los fascistas que abiertamente proponen destruir la propia democracia liberal. No puede hacerlo por dos razones fundamentales: 1. porque como dice Helena Rosenblatt, la institucionalidad liberal que nos llega hoy prioriza los derechos de propiedad de los grandes capitales antes que los derechos sustantivos de las mayorías; 2. por la economización neoliberal de las últimas tres décadas que ha quitado legitimidad y capacidad a los estados para atender las situaciones concretas de la gente.

3. La guerra en Ucrania, como advertimos en su momento varios observadores críticos, se convirtió en un factor de fascistización en Europa. El discurso belicista que estúpidamente adoptaron la centroizquierda y derechas europeas lo que ha hecho es crear condiciones para la normalización de la narrativa fascista. Al tiempo que en los hechos ha implicado recortes del estado de bienestar. Dirigiendo recursos que antes iban a la gente a la compra de armas. Toda una genialidad política de los llamados moderados y pragmáticos (sic).

4. El populismo de derecha es muy efectivo canalizando la nostalgia del hombre blanco europeo (y occidental en general). Porque le da certezas en el plano simbólico; en un contexto de precarización material. Los símbolos mueven, dan sentido y generan sentimientos de que se pisa en suelo firme. Al mismo tiempo, hace ver como grande un pasado de colonizaciones y dominación que hoy solo existe en museos.

5. La izquierda crítica del tecnocapitalismo y realmente independiente de los grandes grupos de interés es el único sector que, mediante un tipo de populismo plebeyo, podría competirle a la ultraderecha en Europa. No en términos de derrotarla electoralmente (que también), sino más bien en el sentido de canalizar la rabia y el malestar no hacia el racismo y militarismo, sino que a la lucha política en clave de los de abajo contra los de arriba. Por los genios de la moderación, como sabemos, prefieren seguir hablando de los "dos extremos". Porque parecería es lo mismo enarbolar discursos racistas y deshumanizantes que proponer que los ricos paguen más impuestos y una vida digna para las mayorías.

I find nothing especially surprising about the AfD’s victory in Saxony-Anhalt — nor do I find it any more alarming than Germany’s broader political tendency in recent decades.

Can we really insist that the AfD is so much worse than the German Social Democrats or Greens, which underwrote our generation’s Holocaust with breathtaking enthusiasm? Can we say that they are so much worse than the CDU, which lay waste to Europe’s peripheral economies before setting its sights on a new world war?

The difference is one of degree. When fascism returns to Germany in earnest, it will march on a road that has been dutifully paved for it by the entirety of Germany’s bourgeois political system. And it will be handed the keys to an army that was resuscitated under US patronage, cultivated under NATO, and supercharged under a renewed agenda of imperialist war.

For years now, Germany’s ruling class has led the way in reversing the concessions that labor had painstakingly extracted from capital over the 20th century. Nowhere was this process as pronounced as in the German Democratic Republic, whose annexation by the West saw one of the largest upward transfers of wealth in human history. The consequences for the people of the East were devastating, and the economic anxieties have only deepened with time.

Fascism represents a culmination of that process, not a break from it. A break would have required a real systemic alternative, and none currently exists.

And for those concerned that the AfD is insufficiently committed to the imperialist war, hold your breath. War is not fought on individual whim; it is a response to contradictions within the imperialist system, and those contradictions are not going anywhere.
