🗣 In 1974, Joseph D. Becker pointed out that rigid rationalist Chomskian linguistics was an emperor without clothes, and explained how syntax actually works.
Rigorously ignored for decades, his theory seems powerfully confirmed by current AI text generators.
“In #NeurIPS2022 reviewing the program chairs can never overtake the slowest reviewer, since the program chairs must first reach the point whence the reviewer started, so that the reviewer must always hold a lead.”
This is beyond shocking. We had connected a few months ago when I tried to recruit him to my research group at NVIDIA. He promised to keep in touch and explore collaborations after he started his faculty position. RIP
Most computer scientists (myself included) have shallow social sciences knowledge. I argue that #AI researchers need significant social science training to understand and empathize with complex issues, like bias and equity, and may be even history and law.
@LeonDerczynski Thanks but it’s only trash if you assume they were insincere according to their value system, which I don’t think they were.
I took a piece out of many they were playing with, and figured out how to modify it to make it work. We as a field rarely place value on such achievements
Great quote from Michael Atiyah on research and creativity (h/t @michael_nielsen). Research should be play. If your research has a roadmap, you're doing it wrong.

📢Translation Shared Task announcement📢
Can you make your translation system adhere to a given terminology? This is very much needed for deploying MT in the real world where you might have a terminology but not parallel data.

The predictions on the fourth photo (attached here again) are, for me, mind-blowing. My guess is that 99.999999% of humans would just flip a coin to decide between Kythnos and Serifos for this photo.
Marco Baroni is looking for students and post-docs for his new ERC, ALiEN https://t.co/vwxSPqxNX5, on emergent communication. Having worked with Marco for several years, I cannot recommend him enough as an advisor, colleague and human being. Besides, the project looks super cool!
I can't imagine being a woman in CS seeing this week's news. I feel shocked and devastated. Foremost for the victims. But also for all the other women who have to put their guard up higher, doubting the authenticity of the professional attention they receive. You deserve better.
Our new paper on de-biasing MT models using self-training approach is now online. We also propose a new metric ΔR which works better than ΔG when we are dealing with neutral gendered sentences. Work done in summer of 2020 with our intern Prafulla.
