@LeGrisian I’m liking Carter Vaughn Findley’s book so far. He writes good prose and strikes a good balance between narrating political history and describing other trends and themes of Ottoman history. I also liked his book about modern Turkish history.
Being in the midcentury Middle East must’ve given everyone a 1500s german messianic peasant revolt level high. Every country seemed to be on a linear road to modernization; both the conservative Arab monarchies and Nasserists were dedicated to aurafarming. The Suez just proved you could administer the most important global trade chokepoint of the period to great success. Archaic religious practices were consistently disappearing. It was just W after W on every aspect except Israel.
