New research led by Dr Tara Jonell (@geodactyl) of @UofGGES has revealed how water scarcity drove the adoption of steam engines in Greater Manchester’s Cottonopolis district during the Industrial Revolution.

Scotland-loving #geologists, we need your help!
In less than a month, the @CyclingWorlds will be held in Scotland! The road race leads from Edinburgh to Glasgow, the time trials are between Stirling and the Lake of Menteith.
We'd like to tell commentators and viewers a wee bit on the cradle of geology! We're looking for about 5-6 spectacular features or interesting background facts of a few sentences each. Arthur's Sea, the Midland Valley are obvious ones, but we're sure you know more!
If you know something worth telling on geological features small and large that a viewer may see on their TV screen during the race, DM us and let us know!

As a female geoscentist that has done a LOT of fieldwork, I cannot empahsize enough how much it frustates me, that people still consider this a taboo. Grow up, and be considerate of females, this is part of our biology. https://t.co/FXJ78Xk2xe

Happy Lunar New Year! 🐇🎉
An enormous rabbit fills the surface of this Japanese print, created in the Year of the Rabbit, 1867. Its round body evokes the moon, where rabbits are said to live as companions of the Moon Goddess.
We wish everyone hope and prosperity in 2023! 🐰✨
A good but not perfect graphic indicating some (but not all) trends related to ongoing global climate change.
Also: some of the troll comments are almost adorably stupid, lol. Popcorn, anyone?
Changes are emerging across the climate system. Everywhere we look, the climate is changing rapidly.
Rate of recent changes is unprecedented in at least 2000 years for many climate metrics.
These changes are not natural; they are primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
If it is not literally the warmest year ever, someone will complain that global warming has stopped.
Year-to-year fluctuations are a normal part of the ongoing global warming trend. Don't be distracted by the noise.
Today is the first day of Hanukkah, often referred to as the Festival of Lights. The vertical schooling behavior of these #Cutlassfish (Trichiurus lepturus) looks similar to flickering candles at times. Seen at 300m depth off of Costa Rica during the #CostaRicaDeep expedition.

Rock coasts, which make up over half the world’s coastlines, could retreat more rapidly in the future due to accelerating sea level rise, according to new research from @imperialcollege and @MartinDHurst of @UofGGES.

A couple of weeks ago we had an icebreaker during my graduate seminar and the question was "What is your irrational fear?" My answer was "hammerhead sharks". And today in class I walked in and saw this:
Earth surface processes + history + technology = cool stuff
A new piece touching on some of my ongoing work with @DrAdamLucas Dr. Peter Jones @nippernaylor @MartinDHurst
Very cool science + history collab. Reconstructions of 19th century climate in Britain find industrialists had more than enough water power available when they made the switch to coal. Why'd they do it??
