@ItsGutsNotGatsu@johnvvariety There’s just so little creativity in modern “shoegaze,” to my mind. That first generation of bands was actively engaging with all sorts of other music that was around them at the time; now it’s sort of a requirement that you sound like 1991
@ItsGutsNotGatsu@johnvvariety I completely agree. There used to be a ton of variety; Ride sounds nothing like MBV, neither of them sounded like Loop, etc. the last “shoegaze” album that really hit for me, as something original and interesting, was No Joy’s Wait to Pleasure
@johnvvariety To be fair to Loveless though I was listening to Wipers yesterday and heard a guitar lick that Kevin Shields turned into a wave of noise for his own use on that album
@johnvvariety I was probably guilty of calling Loveless the best ever or whatever when I was 20 but I have a bit more variety to my life now. Sometimes I drive a car, for example
@johnvvariety@smokingsexxtion I’ve never done more than 20 and that’s super rare, in my experience 10 should do it if you don’t have a tolerance to it specifically
@johnvvariety@smokingsexxtion Everybody’s different with stuff like this I think? Like for some reason anything that is related to mdma hits me about 3x faster and stronger than anyone else I know, and I don’t know why. I’d try a smaller dose if you’re still interested
@johnvvariety@smokingsexxtion It is kind of a hard drug to find the right spot for. When you get it right tho it’s a pretty unique experience, feels similar to how people describe quaaludes
@johnvvariety Fucking exactly nothing sounded hard at all after being pressed thru that shit, it’s just an angry rich man whining over some [admittedly] decent grooves.
@johnvvariety That NIN song sucks so bad tho, completely neutered production that flattens everything into a smooth wafer of “industrial” music. No dynamic range whatsoever which feels very common for the era
@johnvvariety TV on the Radio pretty much only sounded good during this period. Everyone else presumably was doing the opposite of what they were doing
@johnvvariety There’s something about the production I can never shake, like it feels muffled or soft in an unintentional way. Lotta great songs but they sound sharper on Sticky Fingers. Swear I’m not trying to be contrarian
