I don't think better branding will change the material reality that makes San Francisco increasingly uncool: you can't serve coffee or walk dogs for 20 hours a week to make rent and otherwise do creative things, playing music, writing, starting absurd businesses, etc.

I know it's not for everyone - there are no nightclubs or fancy theatres, the mobile phone reception falls over when it rains and the public transport is practically non-existent - but I feel so incredibly lucky to live in a place where I can stand and just listen to absolute, complete, utter silence. On the early morning lanes, if I really, really strain my ears I can pick out the sound of a few sheep in the distance and maybe the odd blackbird in the trees, but that's it. The more time I spend out there, the more I shrink into here. I may never come out.
