I'm an election agent for my wonderful husband, Alistair. Find out more at https://t.co/42iLKtG5tm.
Promoted by Geof Ellingham on behalf of Alistair Chisholm, both at Labour North, Kings Manor, Newcastle NE1 6PA.
@toddles23 I don't know... maybe it's just an innocent choice of words? Let's see, my husband is severely sight-impaired and has some mobility difficulties. Despite this, he spends many hours every week visiting residents and doing casework. And this is the phrase they choose.
Am I being over-sensitive? Does this look like an innocent claim, or an underhand suggestion that a severely sight-impaired councillor with some mobility challenges isn't really up to the job?
One week till polling day - Alistair has been reflecting on some of the ways that standing for election is made harder for disabled people, including negative attacks from opponents… which all adds up to only 10% of local councillors having a disability. https://t.co/O6NJCaH5bU
@Dis_PPL_Protest My husband was a local councillor when he lost his sight 2 years ago from stroke - he's re-standing on Thursday. It's been pretty brutal - the fatigue, lack of practical support, and nudge-nudge suggestions from his opponent that he's not up to the job. https://t.co/O6NJCaH5bU

@RNIB For a longer read about Alistair's experience of running for election and being a Councillor while (quite newly) severely sight-impaired, check out today's blog post...

@RNIB@RNIB ... or what about when you're standing as a disabled candidate in the local elections and your main opponent suggests you just want to "warm a seat in the civic centre"?

@PhyllBuc@salawatson@GosforthLibDems And... the rotating cones quite often don't work - so with silent crossings Alistair has no way of knowing whether it's safe to cross.
@salawatson@PhyllBuc@GosforthLibDems Alistair nearly fell into an unmarked works hole on Heaton Road not long ago, and finding the pavement fully blocked is horribly common. Also, try supporting a blind person down Warwick Street on either side at any time. Pavement parking +/- fat hedges = nightmare!
@PhyllBuc@salawatson@GosforthLibDems The author (my husband) is severely sight impaired, so for him, cars using back lanes is a huge hazard. The government's LTN research says that the LTN views of disabled people are "mixed": our husbands are a good example of that aren't they?
@salawatson Would like to hear your take on the follow-up piece here (full disclosure - I'm the author's husband). Good to have an expert, critical voice involved. https://t.co/pHwdII0d5E
Anyone trying to claim from #AccessToWork#A2W@DWPgovuk today? The online claim form is down and calls are being terminated. No information about what's going on! Very frustrating!
Time to leave Twitter, not that I was ever very active here. This excellent thread sums up why I'm leaving... I hope to find somewhere more pleasant to reside in time. https://t.co/pixa9MttTu
1/Here's an opinion that's going to make some folks mad: If Elon rules Twitter as essentially a conservative-leaning moderator, that's much less bad for society than what Twitter's old management did, which was to stoke maximum ideological combat to boost engagement...
