In leaked litigation papers from the PGA Tour, the leadership outlines information about the decision to buy IMG’s stake in the European Tour Group.
EVERY SINGLE MEMBER, FAN AND PARTNER OF THE EUROPEAN TOUR NEEDS TO READ THIS.
According to the papers, the PGA Tour facilitated the buyout using private debt even though they forecast a $128mm nett loss on their investment over the first term.
“Generally, we find ETG an underinvested and borderline distressed asset.”
So, why do it?
“Eighteen months ago we entered into our Strategic Alliance with the European Tour Group (ETG) and successfully blocked the then Saudi backed PGL from gaining control.”
So, they partly did it to stop the PIF investing into the European Tour. It’s worth remembering that the PIF has invested $300mm into the Asian Tour since then. But, this is where it gets even more interesting.
“On the opportunity front, the PGA TOUR is now in a position to simplify and streamline the flow of talent through a coordinated global schedule. It is also poised to gain ownership of (and the substantial financial upside related to) the European plays of the Ryder Cup-one of the most prestigious and respected events in all of golf.”
The PGA Tour planned all along to use the European Tour as part of a feeder system to send global talent to America. But, more importantly, they want to take control of Team Europe and all European interests in the Ryder Cup.
If the severe punishments served to loyal European Tour members like Lee Westwood didn’t make sense before, then they do now. The European Tour was sold out by the current leadership to work in the best interests of Ponte Vedra, who planned to asset strip them of their best players and best events.
What happens now with “NewCo” is anyone’s guess. But, I find it fascinating how small of a role the European Tour Group leadership are playing in it. I’d love to believe they will strengthen, but as the decisions appear to be being made without them, I don’t hold much hope.
