@umbersorrow this is very reassuring, as I am currently sneaking peeks at all babies in public while I wait for mine to arrive. I'm not trying to creep, I am just baby-impatient
@emeriticus I went to American history class in a room shared by the far left socialist teacher, and the teacher who had two posters of Ayn Rand in his office.
@vividvoid This has been one of those cyclical processes where I have to spiral back and revisit things. A year ago I felt at peace with mortality; now, with my first child on the way and more things to lose than before, I'm having to work through things I thought I'd resolved
@daemonhugger Huh. So if people were used to relying on a pension from one or two companies as their retirement money, that would explain why "diversify your stocks to protect your retirement" was counterintuitive advice for a lot of people
My concern as a landscape architect is not that this is intended to replace trees (b/c no one ever intends the bad outcome) and more that it would disincentivize designing urban spaces to be hospitable to trees, b/c that's already enough of a problem
If it were more cost effective to put in algae tanks than redesign a site to accommodate trees, you bet your ass that 99% of the developers and civil engineers I work with would care enough to redesign the site
It's already like pulling teeth sometimes to persuade people to move the lines on the drawings that show where they want the underground utilities to go to give me enough room to place trees that are required by law to be planted
@visakanv I'm reminded of forecasters/prediction market enthusiasts who judge risks in terms of likelihoods--e.g. "I think there's an 80% likelihood of x happening" rather than just "I think x will happen." Sees like a useful framing for day-to-day risk taking
@foldyrhands I recently had my teeth cleaned by a middle-aged male hygienist for the first time in my almost 30 years of scrupulously regular dental cleanings. It was so weird
@MythicAfricans My late grandfather did his absolute best to convince me and my sibling that jackalopes existed. I probably spent at least two years of my childhood genuinely not sure if they were real or not!
@saul_mondriaan I'm also curious if you've tried to talk to the Tillandsia spirits? Sometimes the parent spirits for plants have useful insight, ime, but sometimes they won't give me the time of day. I hope you figure out the issue!
@saul_mondriaan Huh, that's surprising considering how you've described your watering habits. I wonder if they're not getting enough air circulation? That can exacerbate humidity problems
