Books, nice dinners &rage about the state of things. George as in The Famous Five. A Picador (& thus Pan Macmillan) person but all views remain entirely my own.
I often miss my life-enhancing, insanely generous & frequently infuriating mother. Never more so than now. Were she reading this, I have no doubt her response would be, ‘Don’t be fucking silly, darling. Now pull yourself together.’ Here she is, in typical pose.
@DalrympleWill I am almost never in this place but immensely pleased to have peeked tonight to see this.
It's a bloody marvellous book and one I am so proud to have edited.
This is utter balls. The South Bank was not no go in the 1980s. And though there were then - and before then and since then - parts of London that were dodgy and best avoided late at night, this is true of every major city.
George is so right. Also, 30 years there were areas in London, such as Southbank and many others, that were no-go. Nowadays, the misinformation about London is beyond belief. London is v expensive, yes, but the best and greatest big city in the world, by far. And I travel…a lot!
Memo to Labour's top table: you won because voters were sick of the Tories, not because they thought you would deliver Tory policies more efficiently. They wanted a fairer country. You have broken their hopes. Unforgiveable..
