@JohnGoldman yeah your calf looks like 12! I have been stable in 12% range for 3-4 yrs with 12-14 hrs/wk Z1/Z2, unrestricted eating. Haven’t been able to drop further, tho… would probably need to do what you’re doing. Good luck!
@GuruAnaerobic Endurance vs muscle tradeoff for older ppl is an interesting debate. I lean more to Endurance as I think it’s best for metabolic health (LT1, LT2), not just VO2max. But I wouldn’t become an exoskeleton just to max out eg marathon time
@johngetstrong I began on the bike 4 yrs ago at age 55. My curve would have been much lower than yours. I tried lactate for awhile but now prefer HR. I generally stay below 115 bpm for ez and the wattage has gone up a lot. This was a few days ago.
@hybridathlete That is crazy low body fat if that is your walking around body comp. Impressive VO2 with that much extra muscle. I have similar VO2 but no way could I do it as jacked as you.
@feelthebyrn1 Great performance! What was your power on the bike? Going sub 90 on the run is impressive even on fresh legs, not to mention after swim and bike!
@tim_roozendaal It doesn’t need your weight because running itself already normalizes for weight (everybody must carry their own body weight while running). By contrast a bike test that looked at avg wattage for 12 min would need to be normalized by weight
@esrtweet My theory is not a smoking gun; rather, overweight has gradually become normalized over time, so overweight ppl feel less “out of place” than they would have in the past. Will be interesting to see if Ozempic can reverse this trend
@feelthebyrn1 Re: “My lipid numbers looked a little better when I was training higher volume,” this could also simply be that you were younger then. A lot of people will see a rise in lipids as they age (I certainly did). In any case your numbers are great for no meds!
@feelthebyrn1 There’s a lot of individual variation. I tried cutting saturated fats way down for six months, didn’t make a difference. Going on statins + ezetimibe took my LDL from 180-200 down to 50-60, apoB from 100+ down to 50. I’ll take it for 10 bucks a month
@hybridathlete So impressive with ur strength! Interesting to see your running times (esp. mile) and how they correspond to ur VO2max. I just bike, and my 5min power of 401w gives estimate of 58 VO2max. But I don’t have ur strength :( Otoh, I’m 58yo :D
