Lawyer refuses to return a child to her legal parents and sues for custody because she has grown attached to the child.

- A couple based in the US with three biological children decided to adopt a girl in Nigeria, an orphan who was ab@ndoned at birth in Abia State.

- The adoption was completed in 2020, and the couple began processing her immigration to the US.

- However, COVID19 happened, and travel restrictions were imposed because of the lockdown.

- The child was left in the care of a trusted friend, who is also a lawyer, in Nigeria while the family waited for the travel ban and lockdown to be lifted.

- When the restrictions were lifted in 2022, the family continued the immigration process.

-The lawyer sued the couple, saying she had become attached to the child and asking the court to revoke the adoption and grant her the right to adopt the child instead.

- After two years of legal battle, in 2024, the court dismissed her request and ordered her to return the child to her legal parents.

- The judgment did not sit well with the lawyer, and she appealed the court’s decision, saying she had grown deeply attached to the child.

- In May 2026, the legal parents won the appeal, and the court ordered the lawyer to return the child within two months, but she refused.

- She has now taken the case to the Supreme Court, seeking the right to adopt the child because she believes that is what is best for the child.

- The parents’ lawyer also released a video pleading with her to think of the child and return her to her legal parents.
