The Walkabouts platform includes web-based lessons for pre-K to 5th grade students that integrate movement with math, ELA, science, and social studies content.
Lace up those sneakers—it’s Global Running Day! 👟✨
For elementary students, running may be the fastest way to get to the playground, the best way to win at tag, and the easiest way to feel like a superhero. Today, we’re joining people around the world to celebrate.
Hot weather can move recess indoors—but location matters. This study found kids were most active in gyms and most sedentary in classrooms.

Learning sticks better when students are part of it. In this Walkabout, students work on identifying properties of addition and subtraction while also moving.
Something I noticed when I visited China was public schools always started their days off with a run.
A school in Naperville, Illinois, did an experiment on this and called it "Zero Hour".
Before school, students would hit the gym at 7am and push their heart rates to 80% of their max. Then went on to do class.
The result? Reading scores doubled. Math scores jumped 20x.
On an international test, Naperville 8th graders finished 1st in science (beating Singapore) and 6th in math globally.
Some of my entrepreneur clients swear by doing cardio in the morning. They say it keeps their brain sharp. I don't disagree.
Cardio isn't just for your heart. It's brain fuel.
Exhaust the body to sharpen the mind.
PreK–2: Community Helpers Charades
Tell students you will name a community helper such as a firefighter, librarian, or teacher. Students act out the helper’s role using movements. After each round, ask students how that helper supports the community.
3–5: Historical Figures Charades
Tell students you will name a type of historical role such as an explorer, a civil rights leader, or an inventor. Students act out the role while classmates guess the person. After each turn, briefly discuss the contributions the person made to society.
For the first time in more than a decade, the American Academy of Pediatrics has released a policy statement about recess, reiterating and expanding on their 2013 position that "Recess is a necessary break in the day for optimizing a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. In essence, recess should be considered a child’s personal time, and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.”

Whether it’s a local playground, a state forest, or a National Park, Kids to Parks Day is about turning off screens and exploring the great outdoors. https://t.co/qq2nsmU7ps
How does indoor recess during hot weather impact students' physical activity? A study of 5th grade students in Phoenix, Arizona found that during high-heat weather (91°F–109°F), gym-based recess yielded nearly double the moderate-to-vigorous physical activity of outdoor recess. Classroom-based recess was found to be overwhelmingly sedentary. https://t.co/rnBVAMDsgm
Did you know that Walkabouts and 180s lessons can foster community spirit and teamwork among students through group challenges and collaborative learning tasks?
We hope you'll join our friends at Action for Healthy Kids for this important conversation about building movement-rich school environments to support healthier, more engaged students.
Movement supports more than physical activity, it helps students focus, engage, and feel ready to learn throughout the school day.
“The Movement Imperative: Fueling Movement Across the School Day” will feature leaders sharing practical strategies and district-level approaches for making movement part of the daily student experience.
