Prosecutors filed treason charges at a Dar es Salaam court today against around 100 suspected protesters, who could face the possibility of a death penalty if found guilty.

This is the first time in Tanzania's history that suspected protesters are charged with treason.

Official documents from the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court show that the suspects were accused of intimidating the executive, attempting to block the 2025 general election and destruction of government property.

The Tanzanian government said on Thursday it will enact tough, new laws to punish protesters and seek the extradition of a US-based activist who called for unprecedented election day demonstrations in the country.

In his first day in office after being reappointed as Attorney General, Hamza Johari vowed to bring Los Angeles based online activist Mange Kimambi to Tanzania to answer criminal charges over the deadly protests.
