Have you ever heard of Duke’s secret basketball game?
In 1944, the all-white Duke basketball team faced off against the all-black North Carolina Central University team in an interracial game.
Due to strict segregation laws, the teams had to exercise extreme caution and barred the doors to NCCU’s gym to keep out prying eyes.
NCCU won, 88–44.
They had so much fun that instead of heading home, they mixed their squads and played a second game.
One Duke player later told his family: “We sure had fun and I especially had a good time, for most of the fellows playing with me were Southerners. And when the evening was over, most of them had changed their views quite a lot.”
Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the secret matchup. 💙
