@ellomelissa no amount of music theory analysis can truly explain this wild ass performance imho but i think its not just too many words, it’s that she maybe didn’t practice singing while moving around & planning where to breathe, which is why she sounds breathless. or she’s just nervous
@emily_rj@julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit &a cursory glance at your profile now shows you've subtweeted an entire thread about this exchange, fully willfully misinterpreting what i've said here to claim i insist on indoor dining vs safer options. this isnt good faith engagement & im definitely stepping away at this point
@emily_rj@julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit with all due respect, i feel that you're committed to misunderstanding me &interpreting what i'm saying in bad faith so i'm going to step away from this dialogue. i'll reiterate that i feel the tone & manner in which we ask ppl to shift behavior is as important as the ask itself.
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit /shame isn't an effective tool for producing change; if it was, then ppls behaviors would have shifted already. expressing valid anger & communicating efficiently are not mutually exclusive imho, and both are important in helping ppl shift behavior & outlook
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i appreciate your thoughtful reply & agree with many points you made. i think there's a difference btwn how political outlets portray things vs how ppl engage on a person2person basis though, & it's important for us to try & meet ppl where they're at as opposed to using shame bc/
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i think they are trying to point out that the tone of the discourse is unhelpful towards achieving the broader goal though
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i agree theres ways 2 reduce risk, but doesn’t engagement go both ways? when ppl feel shamed, its human nature 2 disengage &become defensive. not to say that ppl don’t have the right 2 engage however they choose, but the way we engage & the outcomes we want 2 see are linked.
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit what would thoughtful engagement look like to you? i am not asking to challenge you here but to actually thoughtfully engage with your point in a genuine way.
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit (to be clear, not implying that *you* are scolding & shaming, but rather that the overall discourse around this holds that tone)
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i understand & feel your pain - it is challenging & difficult. some of us, like myself, make choices to reduce risk such as masking & avoiding high risk activities. but the reality is that most ppl are not going to do this & the common approach of scolding & shaming isnt working
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit unfortunately, most of the patios are still shut down despite the unseasonably warm weather & trust me, i wish they were open bc i’d sit outside! but again, i’m speaking to the generalization that OP made & not my specific circumstance
@emily_rj@julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i am not debating that people can’t make this choice. i came to point out that OP was generalizing about what is and isn’t feasible for all. also want to add that this type of engagement with ppl feels confrontational & antithetical to the goal of positive pubhealth comm imho
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit my point was not intended to shut down any discourse about risk management but rather to point out that it isn’t as easy & simple as OP was implying it to be for everyone (eg many ppl w autoimmune conditions like raynauds cannot sit in the cold for extended periods)
@emily_rj@julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i’m glad you were able to eat outside! some of us live in areas where it is below freezing for much of the year & restaurants close patios for snow & cold. takeout is always an option & i am not here to defend indoor dining so idk why ppl are reading that into what i am saying
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit again, my take is not of defending indoor dining but rather to point out that eating outside is not realistic nor feasible for everyone year round. takeout is absolutely always an option!
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit never once did i say or even imply that this is a reason people MUST dine indoors, just stating the fact that eating outside is not a given for everyone at all times esp those in colder climates. and then everyone assumed i meant that eating indoors is safe and righteous lol
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit “did u know that people at poor outcomes live in places with cold weather” read condescending to me, but i appreciate if i misunderstood yr intent. i responded initially to the person who was claiming it is so easy to just eat outside because its actually not that easy for all
@michaelzrobin @julia_doubleday@hannahdentata@offbeatorbit i don’t need someone to condescend to me for simply making the point that it is challenging to dine outside in cold parts of the country lol. i know people at poor outcomes live everywhere and that’s not the point i was making at all but go off
