On the talk show today, @giowills the president of the @LifesavingUG shares on @RadioOneFM90 why swimming classes and water safety are a priority today!
"When we look at the numbers, Uganda loses about eight people every day to drowning, which is almost one person every hour.
The figures are very close to road traffic accident deaths, yet drowning does not receive the same level of attention. With Lake Victoria and many rivers, our exposure is high, and that makes the situation even more serious," says @giowills.
Swimming is not just a sport, it is a survival skill!
“In many countries, children must learn to swim before finishing primary school. Introducing structured, supervised swimming lessons can significantly reduce drowning. There is no age limit to learn, adults can do it safely with proper instruction. With qualified trainers, supervision, and lifeguards, swimming becomes a true survival skill.” - @giowills.
His message was reinforced by listeners who shared🗣️🔊:
1⃣“I’m 44 years old, and I learned how to swim in February 2026, and I’m proud.”
2⃣Another listener shared that, "Swimming was a choice back then, but now we encourage supervised lessons so people can learn properly and safely, not by being pushed into the water.”

At Serena Hotel, Kampala for the launch of the film; #TheUnPredictableWaters.
While working on this film, nothing prepared me for the reality on the ground.
By the shores of Lake Victoria, I met fishermen who’ve spent decades on the water yet can’t swim, risk lives everyday. Parents who send their kids to school in boats—no life jackets, just prayers.
Drowning in Uganda isn’t just accidents. It’s a crisis fueled by systemic gaps in safety, policy & awareness. Seeing it firsthand changed me. We need to talk about this.
Special thanks to @reachahand for all the support and @SautiPlusMedia for the production

Did you know?
Knowing how to swim doesn't mean that you can successfully rescue someone who is drowning. If improperly done, a drowning rescue attempt can endanger both the resuer's and victim's lives.

The Global Status Report on #DrowningPrevention was recently launched by @WHO.
