Dear Banks,

In this the age of escalating fraud, cybercrime and identity theft, it can no longer be acceptable for us customers to simply trust that the person on the other end of the line is genuinely calling from the bank.

Just as we clients are required to verify our identities before discussing our accounts, bank employees should be subjected to a similar verification process. The burden of trust cannot rest solely on the customer.

There ought to be a secure authentication system that allows customers to verify that a caller is indeed an authorised representative of the bank before any conversation about personal or financial matters takes place. Whether this takes the form of a unique verification code, an in-app confirmation, a secure push notification, or another authentication mechanism.

Banks have invested heavily in protecting themselves from fraud. It is time they invest with equal urgency in protecting customers from fraudulent individuals impersonating bank employees.

The current model, where a stranger phones you and immediately begins asking security questions, is outdated and unsafe.

No amount of cyberbullying will change the facts:

1. Irregular migration cannot be addressed by vigilantism. Law enforcement must address all matters of criminality, including the abuse of immigration laws.

2. Migration will happen, but it must happen within the confines of the rule of law.

3. Dehumanising people does not address any problem, let alone immigration challenges.

4. Structural economic issues will not be addressed by targeting foreign nationals.

5. The history of South Africa cannot be told without understanding migration, from the Mfecane / Difaqane up to the dictates of colonial settlers.

The mobilisation, based on its framing of problems, DOES invite violence & hate. There is no way it is not going to result into mass looting & bloodshed.

We know what we are talking about. We have organised marches since we were teenagers. UPDATE: The National Health Department has confirmed a British National remains in a critical condition in a Sandton hospital after contracting Hantavirus.

He’s in isolation & authorities are working with the NICD to conduct contract tracing.
It’s also been confirmed that a Dutch couple died as a result of falling ill on the cruise ship.
The wife died after collapsing at OR Tambo, while her husband passed away on arrival at St Helena island.
