Transmissible cancers, though they do not naturally occur in people, are more common in animals than previously believedโespecially in the ocean https://t.co/nhfusjzWZq
A "strange" trio...Intraspecific adoptations are rare, but not in a bottlenose dolphin community in French Polynesia. Scientists observed this behaviour several times. ๐ณ๐

A lot of bird species perform water bathing, even in the coldest months! It's important for feather maintenance.
But still little is known about the functions.Who can tell me, what species is this adorable bird

Take aways from expert Dr. Mika Peck's talk on ParaEcology:
-Community conservation & building relationships is key to success
- Do research you love
- Be patient with research as success will always take more
time than you hope

Boxer crabs are my favorite crabs! ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฅ
They steal complete anemones or fragments from conspecifics if they loose their own and induce asexual reproduction of their anemone by splitting them.

@fcamus In order to optimize their #fitness, female and male flies eat different nutrients.
ยฐFemales comsume more proteins which is important to have more yolk protein in the large eggs.
ยฐMales eat more carbs because they need more energy to chase females and chase out males.

Last week's seminar was about the 'Genomic insights into metabolism and fitness'. @fcamus found out that dietary choices are influenced by genotype, mating status, and sex in Drosophila melanogaster. ๐ฆ

At least 3 different genes determine the wolf's coat color. A research about the wolves from the @YellowstoneNPS found that there is a relationship between coat color and overall health +reproductive success. ๐บ

Research reveals a wolf's coat color has a surprising link to overall health + reproductive success. Wolves with black coats have higher survival rates when exposed to canine distemper than did wolves with lighter coats. https://t.co/8ooUhbeJiC
@vronwig gave a great talk about the positive public attitudes to pollinators! 97% of the public that were interviewed by Veronica think pollinators are benfifical to their garden/outside space...which is great for our pollinating pals!! ๐ #2019EBE#pollinators#bees#hoverfly
A study by @vronwig revealed that there is a lack of information about pollinator-friendly plants in garden centres: Only two of 25 people had received relevant information about pollinators or pollinator-friendly plants! #2019EBE#pollinators#plants

Since I'm new at @SussexUni , I'm all the more excited to see what the campus looks like in spring/summer.
(But I think there could be more wildflower meadows to increase pollination instead of grass areas! ๐ค)

Anyone can help mitigate the decline in pollinators. Wildlife friendly gardening is so important! Not every flower attracts the same number of pollinators. @DaveGoulson 's study showed the plants Calamint, Sneezeweed and Cranesbill are best at attracting pollinators. #2019EBE
A study published in 2017 showed that there is a decline of 75% in flying insects biomass in 63 nature protection areas in Germany over 27 years (1989-2014).
