The spectacular 'blue room' newly unveiled in Pompeii. Interpreted as a sacrarium, a domestic space dedicated to the exhibition of sacred objects, the room features red niches set within frescoed walls of a glorious blue – a colour reserved for only the richest Roman interiors. This townhouse in Region IX of Pompeii was undergoing renovations at the time of the volcanic eruption in 79 AD, with rooms emptied of their normal furnishings and instead being used for storage of amphorae and building materials.
