We are back to seeing children leave their tents before dawn, stand in long lines, and hope there is enough left when they reach the front. For what? For simple bread.

These boys do exactly that every morning. They support their mother, who is living with cancer and diabetes. She can no longer make bread herself because flour has become so expensive. Yet she needs bread to take her medication with. Something so basic has become a daily struggle for survival.

The Sameer Project’s bakery exists to ease this burden. Every bundle of bread we produce costs around $2, providing families with fresh bread they can rely on instead of risking hunger.

On June 13, The Sameer Project distributed 363 bundles of bread to families at Marine Club Camp. The total cost was $650 after commission fees.

Across displacement camps, the community kitchens that so many families have relied on are closing as funding disappears. For hundreds of thousands of people, those meals were the only guaranteed food they would receive each day.

The Sameer Project is feeling that pressure too.

Our community kitchen is now operating at just 50% of its previous capacity because donations have dropped so dramatically. If support does not increase, we may be forced to cut production by another 50%, leaving even more families without a hot meal.

After more than 1,000 days of devastation, this is not the time for hunger to add to the catastrophe.

One day maybe we’ll have the chance to root for the Palestinian national team on the world stage. And maybe some of these children in Gaza will represent their home team.
