100 million light-years from Earth, these intertwined galaxies (spotted by @NASAHubble) are being drawn ever-closer by their combined gravitational attraction: https://t.co/Autq4dX3HO
We are excited to announce that we will be partnering with @genevaconserve to put on an educational event surrounding the planets, asterisms, and constellations this Thursday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. for children ages 6-10. Register here: https://t.co/C9pPdQWbE2
It is migration season on the Mississippi Flyway! Be sure to turn your lights off and help our migratory birds get where they're going safely. To learn more about the impacts on artificial light at night on migratory birds, please see the paper by Cabrera-Cruz et al. 2018
One common misconception is that reducing wattage corresponds to reducing light emitted. However, as we create more efficient lightbulbs, the same amount of power (Watts) can produce even more light. When looking to replace your bulbs, look for the light (lumen) measurements!
Unfortunately, given the severe thunderstorm predictions tonight, we have to cancel the Perseid Cruise Star Party for safety purposes. We're pretty bummed about it, too.
Thank you to everyone who bought tickets for this event to support GLAS Education! You should be receiving an email with your ticket refund. Please contact Geneva Lake Cruise Line if you do not receive an email by the end of the day.
Come join GLAS for a night amongst the stars! September 17th at Library Park Lake Geneva is your chance to explore astronomy โ because what is the Autumnal Equinox, anyway? โ and gaze at gas giants through an 8-inch Dobsonian telescope. It's won't be a night to miss!
Crossover alert! Thursday, August 12th join Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy for a 8PM night hike, followed by telescope observing with GLAS Education. The Perseids will be out in the sky, so we hope to see you out at Kishwauketoe!
Adam, Simon, and Chris Kirby successfully installed a student-made night sky quality sensor yesterday!
The sensor was installed as part of the LENSS project, which gives local high school students the opportunity to learn STEAM skills by working to improve their local community.
Humans aren't the only living creatures to use the stars as guides โ birds, seals, and dung beetles do as well. What happens to the star-guided wildlife when skyglow obscures their galactic guides? #darkskies#skyglow

Unfortunately, tickets have sold out for our Perseid's Star Party. However, whether or not you managed to grab a boat ticket, feel free to join us in September for our Autumnal Equinox Star Party! It's a great chance to gaze at gas giants and learn about the equinox itself.
Simon, Adam, Ashley, and Ashanah were hard at work hosting solar and lunar observing last Friday at the @SLWCA. Ashanah even grabbed photos of the moon, which was red from the haze โ check it out!
GLAS Education is happy to announce The Perseid Starlight Cruise! Coming August 11, set sail on a starry adventure and be stunned by the Perseid Meteor Shower from the comfort of a boat on Geneva Lake.
