Believe it or not i like this movie but the performances range either from mediocre to awful - Sarah Sherman unfortunately tips toward the Extremely Guilty side of the equation, just excruciating and lazy work
@matthiasellis A very arresting performance. i'm just so taken with the little snarl thing she does: how disconnected it is from the substance of the language. the whole performance trades on that disconnect (which is also why i can't decide if she's good or bad in this, hah)
@writingenjoyer When "experimental" and "minimalist" harden into a genre in and of itself. I do /like/ her work, but her acolytes tend to mistake "frictionlessness" for "slipperiness" (quantitatively similar experiences, sure, but not qualitatively!)
definitely wrong, certainly stupid. thought =! vibes: you have to actually read. if you can't articulate why kafka is evil (truly nonsense) beyond "his work is godless" or w/e (which is wrong, but I can't imagine why else he's "extremely evil" ) then don't have a take on him
pretty clearly the point being made here is against the weird optimization of fitness: six times per week bodybuilding, looksmaxxing, etc. but you guys love to misinterpret and be fucking morons every single day
🚨 “The More Dysgenic, the Better”: Beatrice Adler-Bolton Says the Left Must Give Up the “Fantasy of Being Fitter Than the Fascists”
At Socialism 2026, Adler-Bolton argues that “fitness is a measure of relative disposability under capitalism” and says the goal should not be to become “more useful to the ruling order.”
She says the left should not try to beat fascists “at their own game” by becoming “fitter, more eugenic.”
“In fact, the more dysgenic, the better, I think.”
She closes by arguing that revolution is not “a contest between optimized and properly prepared bodies” and that the very idea is itself fascist.
you don’t need to know the original language to gauge the efficacy of a translation. believe it or not, you can indeed judge it on the standards of “good writing”
really funny to me that max lawton-heads respond to negative criticism about w/e their boring flavor of the month “maximalist” novel happens to be with nothing but cliché. “it’s a novel intended to tear you in two—not placate you with the petty banalities of plot.” it all sucks
what is this? they're both blue? is that the joke? at a certain point the essay just devolves into saying names -- "okay, white boy, put down the Der Nister!" just remarkably unfunny stuff
perhaps the most irritating tone that critics can adopt is "someone who's not funny but who's decided their thing is Being Funny"

Once per week the mayor has the police come to my house and smash all my plates and dishes, while representatives from the press and local churches watch
cant position god as "the real" when its just the name you've given the real. believe in god all you want (i do!) but dont act like this is somehow less epic than reddit new atheism (which, btw, currently probably has the smallest cultural foothold its ever had)
people aren't against data centers b.c. they're "magic evil" or w/e they're against them bc my mother's energy bill has doubled lol. not witchcraft. in fact, pretty material!
to be specific it's because they dont know that present participle is ugly and juvenile btw. figured i'd bring this up because "gerunds" and "present participles" are in the discourse today
sometimes you edit a writer and tell them a sentence is bad, so here's a rework. and then they rework it themselves and make it bad. and then you go, no, it's bad, so here's a rework. and then they rework it themselves and make it bad. all because they dont understand grammar
been a while since i read an essay in which we demanded novelists be “feral.” let’s get one of those out there again. that moshfegh bullshit is close but no cigar. need a boring moron to talk about feral novels
hate that a podcaster’s job has become about yes-and’ing obvious bullshit. not surprised no one knows how to be social anymore: the conversations that most people engage with most often (podcasts!) are completely smooth, devoid of the avuncular suspicion that typifies a good chat
Sequoia partner Doug Leone reveals he got a root canal with no Novocaine to see if he was really a badass
"I had to get a root canal. And I had to go to a meeting right after that. I told the dentist, drill without any Novocaine.”
“My whole life, I wanted to see if I was a badass or not. Am I a fake badass that has this envelope nobody could tell, or am I really a badass on the inside?"
"He drilled and I jumped. And I told the dentist, I won't move again. And I didn't move again. I used the trick of thinking what it must be like to go to war and lose an arm or two legs. That's pain with consequences. Mine was pain with no consequences."
“It’s just nerve endings from there to my brain to my spine, f*ck it I’m not moving.”
"I had to go home and change my shirt because I was a puddle of sweat. But I didn't move. And so I love fear. It does wonders for me."
almost pitch perfect but missing the line that reads like “he thought about Bataille; he thought about the sea jerking off, the sun shining through a rectum”
