This morning, I read that the firing of scientists at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration could seriously impact Great Lakes conservation. Many of these scientists collaborated with Canadian researchers to monitor water quality, including tracking blue-green algae and managing invasive species, such as sea lampreys.

While the article calls upon Canada to become more self-reliant, the responsibility falls on Ontario as the only province bordering the lakes. I think the province has a duty to make up this shortfall by investing in Great Lakes management and actively collaborating with the U.S. states that border the lakes to prevent ecological harm.
