@JessiexxYong@Lee_Vertisce@Pirat_Nation He’s also forgetting to convert dollars to euros, bro literally said “bullshit” and made an even better value PC to debunk it.
Genuinely hilarious that you built this list as an “own” when it is the same price as the French build, and actually has twice the GPU memory. If you replace the single channel ram with a 2x8gb dual channel kit like they used you’ve unironically built an even better system for the same price.
@UnusedArmor@GMcHorseman@Pirat_Nation Brother. SteamOS is Linux. You could just load SteamOS onto this thing, it even has an AMD GPU for compatibility.
@ItsJustSunday@enigma890@MericBaglayan@LupintheI Chinese manufacturers are already tooling up to fill the market gap left by Micron and the others. It won’t be long before the market normalizes. The GPU shortage was a good two years, this RAM bubble has only been going on 6 months, patience.
Here’s the thing, the DDR5 in the steam machine will not make an appreciable difference vs DDR4 dual channel or not, because of the laptop processor on the Steam machine that will not make use of the available speed and bandwidth in any appreciable way for gaming performance, and this may shock you, but the most important thing in gaming performance (allegedly the purpose of the Steam machine) is the GPU. Which in this unit, is more powerful immediately, and also upgradeable later.
You can say it’s not, but the GabeCube benchmarks are out there. It’s a laptop in a box with no upgrade path at all, vs a machine that you can legitimately outperform the GabeCube with right now, and for less than the price of a whole new device, upgrade layer. This bubble will pass just like the last RAM bubble, and just like the mining GPU craze.
Cute comment and all, but unironically the only computers burning houses down in the year 2026 are high end rigs with 5090’s. Modern hardware do a very good job of not burning themselves down. Unless you have a 12vhpwr 5090. These are all first party brand new components. The power supply is a little sketch but if you’re that scared you can get an 80+ rated equivalent for a few bucks more.
Idk about you but I keep two PC’s one for myself and one for my wife, and they’re both a ship of Theseus, in an eternal state of receiving upgrades to remain reasonably current. Upgrade ability is an always has been an essential part of PC building. Years ago it was crypto mining driving up GPU prices, before that even we had a RAM crisis even before this one. The advantage to having a fully upgradeable, true custom build, is that you can upgrade as market conditions permit, and not have to buy an entirely new device every time.
@G_E_AGLE@LupintheI You can undervolt it, just as valve does by default with the steam machine to keep it as silent as all of the fanboys like to praise it for.
@Shinkuchan4@LupintheI Yes, and this system will run circles around a Steam machine, and you can upgrade it in the future. Should RAM prices come down or you find a good mobo+ram combo sale.
@enigma890@MericBaglayan@LupintheI DDR4 is not a limiting factor when the Steam machine is running single channel DDR5 and a 7600M for graphics lol. At least with this build in the future you could upgrade. Watch out for mobo+ram combo sales.
@messedupfoods More like a medieval knight. Peasants had chickens but they were not meat birds, chickens were much too valuable for eggs to be slaughtering for meat.
Actually nobody has to eat the bullet on a product that is poorly positioned in the market. I support Valve’s effort to get Linux gaming across the line as a mainstream option, but this is not going to do numbers. It’ll be lucky to be comparable to Xbox Series sales, which is by far biggest failure of the last console generation. Not counting the previous Steam Machines, in case you’re forgetting those like everybody else did. I also don’t care for Valve’s excuses on subsidization. They make 30% on every sale on the Steam Marketplace, just like their competitors in their ecosystems.
@JustAName051@SurvivedKombat Nintendo has their super casual gaming market locked down. Not really comparable. I could see the GabeCube going Xbox Series numbers over the next 5 years, possibly, unless Xbox releases the Helix as a subsidized more powerful alternative that also has access to Steam next year.
@Mus1615940@phyo_oscar@Masterchiefin21@CatsuneMikuFan >that doesn’t cheap out on anything
Valve already cheaped out on you lil bro; laptop grade hardware in a small box, mobile gpu, chopped down outdated architecture cpu. It’s not everyone else’s job to do your shopping for you.
