The current navigation officer of Bath-Built USS Shiloh (CG 67) is Navy Lt. Caitlin Dailey. More than two decades ago, her father, retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Donald Dailey, served in the same role on the same ship. "It's really special that I get to serve on board the same ship as my dad because even though we are thousands of miles apart, I get to feel close to him," she said. Launched in 1990, the ship is currently at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, Hawaii.

There’s many compelling examples of why our shipbuilders earned the “Bath-built best-built” reputation. One of the most notable is the story of Bath-built USS Laffey (DD 724). The Sumner-class destroyer was part of the invasion force during the World War II battle of D-Day, then was moved to the Pacific theater.

On April 16, 1945, as it was sailing near Okinawa, some 50 Japanese kamikaze planes closed in on the destroyer. Laffey was hit by four bombs and six kamikazes. When the last attack ended, the destroyer was on fire and its rudder was jammed but still Laffey did not sink. It was towed away and, after temporary repairs, sailed back to the U.S. Laffey survived to fight in the Korean War and earned the nickname “The Ship That Would Not Die”.

USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Mahan (DDG 72), HNoMS Thor Heyerdahl (F-314), HNoMS Steil (P-963), and HNoMS Maud (A-530) transit the Soroysundet off the northern coast of Norway above the Arctic Circle. 🇺🇸🇳🇴

Destroyer Squadron Two, as a part of Carrier Strike Group 12, is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations to support the warfighting effectiveness, lethality and readiness of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and defend U.S. Allied and partner interests in the region.
