Indian-origin man charged with 22 counts of child sex crimes after online tip
LEE COUNTY, Ga. — An online tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has led to the arrest of a Lee County man on 22 counts of sexual exploitation of children, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
The cybertip, submitted July 28, reported that child sex abuse material had been uploaded from an address in Lee County. Following an investigation, deputies identified and arrested Smit Patel.
Patel was taken into custody at his place of employment in Albany and transported to the Lee County Jail. He has since bonded out.
Sheriff’s officials said the tip and subsequent investigation formed the basis for the 22 felony charges. WALB is continuing to follow the case for additional details.

BREAKING - NEW THREAT ON GURPATWANT SINGH PANNUN’S LIFE
Prominent Sikh activist and Sikhs for Justice general counsel “Gurpatwant Singh Pannun” has revealed that the FBI and RCMP have issued him a fresh Duty to Warn alert over a new credible threat to his life.
FBI agents visited him last Thursday and advised him not to travel until the threat is neutralized. The RCMP followed up with a phone warning on Tuesday. No further details of the plot were provided.
This comes even as Nikhil Gupta, the Indian national who pleaded guilty in the 2023 assassination plot against Pannun, awaits sentencing on November 20 in Manhattan federal court. U.S. authorities have previously stated Gupta was directed by an Indian government employee.
Pannun, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen, is once again under active threat.
The targeting of Sikh voices continues.
