Okay this Tommy Robinson thing is doing my head in.
1. The MSM did report on the grooming gang, i think it was the SM's reporting which highlighted it and caused a trial.
2. Tommy was told not to report on the actual trial (for the victims and prevent miscarriage of justice)
@VolumeRose@pinkheretic No i didn't i gave two examples of attrocities committed and my opinions behind them, often such things are more complicated than religion/anti religion which has been entire point from the start. Claiming people doing things because of a book ignores the various other reasons.
@VolumeRose@pinkheretic Now this last part is difficult to articulate.
I don't place Atheism on a pedastal that cannot be touched by claiming all it is is the lack of the belief of a diety, what i see it as is a belief of rationality over religion which can be equally as dangerous.
@VolumeRose@pinkheretic I didn't say it was? I said it was in the name of religion and that in reality was a revolution against English rule. To expand it was framed as Catholics vs Protestant but in reality it was Ireland vs England.
@VolumeRose@pinkheretic As for Islam? I really don't know what to make of it. It is totalitarism wrapped up in religous teachings therefore i have no respect for it. Does that mean religion is inherently bad? No, just means some people knew they can use belief structures to abuse power.
@VolumeRose@pinkheretic Now i would associate all of them (including Stalin/Mao/Pal Pot) to be power grabs under the guise of the causes they supposedly represented. However i will say this, if you wish to link bad things to people simply because they were religous, you can donthe same if they were not.
@054durin@pinkheretic It was, until it was declared illegal and punnishment was death. If a Russian was a theist it was done in private in fear of death.
@pinkheretic No it is what is called rational thinking, which is a key point of atheism no?
If it is the case than do you not agree that we can rationalise any actions if we search hard enough to do so. I mean Hitler rationalised a superior race, Stalin rationalised starving his population.
@pinkheretic However and what we as atheists should not deny is that when we have attempted to remove religion from society it has ended in disastrous consequences.
@pinkheretic Okay, but honestly i think that is an unfair comparison. We have only toyed around with the idea of no god for 200 years? That's 2% of recorded human history. Of course more is going to be committed in gods name then atheism.
